Covid-19 in Wirral

Anyone who lives or works in Wirral and does not have Covid-19 symptoms will be eligible for symptom-free testing from Monday 7 December 2020 at the following sites:

  • Floral Pavilion, New Brighton
  • Birkenhead Market
  • Greasby Library
  • Eastham Library

Changes to to Emergency Departments in Wirral from 24 November 2020

To ensure social distancing in the Emergency Department waiting areas, people who do not need an ambulance are being asked to contact NHS 111 for an appointment before attending. The service will then book them a time slot at the Emergency Department at Arrowe Park Hospital or at the most appropriate health service for the patient.

Anyone who attends the Emergency Department without an appointment from NHS 111 will still be seen but could be directed to other services for treatment.

People with life threatening conditions that need emergency attention should still call 999. Likewise, if the condition is not serious, they should still seek advice from their pharmacy or make an appointment with their GP.

Change to Walk In Centres

The Urgent Treatment Centre at Arrowe Park and Walk in Centres at Victoria Central (including minor injuries) and Eastham are now operating a telephone triage and appointment only system.

There is currently NO drop-in facility.

Any patients needing to attend any of these centres should call 0151 201 4190 (phone line is open 8.00 a.m. - 10 p.m., seven days a week including bank holidays).

Sudden is a free service for bereaved people protecting their emotional and physical wellbeing from day one, and for the first ten weeks, at a time of shock and loss in cases when someone has died suddenly including COVID-19 and suicide.

Health Care Assistant (HCA)

Our Health care Assistant (HCA) Emma works Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. Emma can see patients for B12 injections, blood pressure/hypertension monitoring, diabetic foot screening, INR checks, NHS health checks, new patient medicals and coronary heart disease annual monitoring.

Cervical Screening - Don't Forget

Cervical screening can prevent cancer before it starts. Two women die every day from cervical cancer. Don't ignore your cervical screening invite. If you missed your last cervical screening, book an appointment with our practice nurse.

Support For People Affected by Suicide

Amparo provides free, timely and confidential support to anyone in Wirral who has been affected by suicide. This can include assistance with media enquiries, dealing with the police or coroner and help understanding the inquest process. Amparo is not counselling - it is practical assistance following a suicide. Prescribing of over the counter medicines has changed

Your GP, nurse or pharmacist will not generally give you a prescription for over the counter medicines for a range of minor health concerns. Instead, over the counter medicines are available to buy in a pharmacy or supermarket in your local community.

The team of health professionals at your local pharmacy can offer help and clinical advice to manage minor health concerns and if your symptoms suggest it’s more serious, they’ll ensure you get the care you need. ***Bowel Cancer Screening***

Invitations are sent to everyone over 60 years of age. We strongly recommend that you send your samples as soon as possible. We believe that early detection and early treatment can save several lives. Most people will have normal results, only a few might have to go for further tests if stool test is positive.

Please do not ignore your invitation letter, if you would like to discuss this further with one of the Doctors in the surgery, we would be very happy to advise you over the telephone or in person if you prefer. Alternatively further information can be obtained by:

Blood in pee could be a sign of cancer. Do you look before you flush? If you don't, you may miss seeing blood in your pee - a possible sign of cancer. If you notice it, even if it's 'just the once' tell your doctor. For more info:

Procedures of Low Clinical Priority

These are operations or treatments that medical experts agree offer only limited or temporary benefit, and which are not felt to be necessary to maintain good health. This means they need to be considered on a case by case basis and meet strict criteria before they can be funded by the NHS. Crisis Text Service - James' Place

A new 24 hour crisis text messenger service, provided by James' Place is now available to those who are experiencing a mental health crisis by texting JP to 85258. The service aims to connect every texter experiencing suicidal crisis to a trained volunteer who will listen and support the texter to take steps towards feeling better.

The text messenger service can be accessed by all regardless of gender and texts are free from EE, O2, Vodafone, 3, Virgin Mobile, BT Mobile, GiffGaff, Tesco Mobile and Telecom Plus networks.

New Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust Website

Wirral Community Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust has a new website . This been designed using insight from patients, stakeholders and staff, the site offers an improved user experience and is fully accessible on all devices. 

Patient Participation Group

We are refreshing our Patient Participation Group and welcome any Patients in joining.

You would need to commit to 4 or 5 meetings a year at the Practice. This group is run by Patient for Patients. The aim of the Patient Participation Group is to advise and inform the Practice on matters of importance and to help identify solutions to problems. The group can also hold fundraisers and 'awareness' events for other patients.

Children and Young People's Out of Hours Advice Line

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service have set up the Children and Young People's Out of Hours Advice Line to provide access to a mental health service for children and young people, their families and concerned professionals outside of the usual hours. MyMind is a website for young people who may be experiencing mental health difficulties. You can find information on how to cope, how to access help and support and services in your local area.

Support for Children and Young People Affected by Domestic Violence

DiAmond offers 1:1 counselling in schools or colleges for children and young people from Wirral who are affected by Domestic Abuse.

This service is funded by Wirral Borough Council on behalf of the Office of the Police and Crime Commissioner for Merseyside.

Support for Carers

Caring for someone else can be very rewarding but it can also be stressful, isolating and can impact on the carer’s own health and wellbeing. Many carers also navigate the added pressure of juggling their caring and work responsibilities.

Nurse Practitioner

Our Nurse Practitioners, Mrs Cory James and Ms Hilary Milne, can issue prescriptions and see patients over 12 months of age with urine infections, chest infections, sore throats, coughs/colds, earache and musculoskeletal pain. Please ask to see them for these conditions so that the doctors are available to see patients with more complex conditions.

Online Access

You can now order all your repeat prescriptions and book appointments online via our Patient Access Service. We encourage this as best practice. Simply complete the online access form, sign and bring in to surgery with photographic identification to sign up. Patient Access Form

Friends and Family Test

The NHS wants to ensure that you have the best possible experience of care.  The NHS Friends and Family Test is a way of gathering your feedback about your experience so we can make improvements to our services.

Your feedback will help us learn more about what you think about our service - what you like and what you think we could improve.
